Gharial Population in Chitwan National Park, Nepal

Chitwan National Park Office conducted its annual monitoring of the endangered Gharial crocodile in the Rapti and Narayani rivers from 29 November to 29 December 2022. The objective was to assess the current population status and habitat condition through direct observation.

The survey recorded a total of 366 gharials, with 231 in the Rapti River and 135 in the Narayani River, showing an increase compared to the previous year’s total of 352 gharials. During monitoring, 9 hatchlings were observed (7 in Rapti and 2 in Narayani), indicating successful breeding. Additionally, the presence of one smooth-coated otter was noted, considered a positive sign for aquatic biodiversity.

Since 1978, conservation efforts including captive breeding, habitat restoration, and reintroduction have been ongoing. The park reaffirmed its commitment to continued gharial conservation, regular monitoring, and collaboration with concerned agencies for river ecosystem protection.
